Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum. Hemorrhoids can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (on the skin around the anus).

Causes
Hemorrhoids develop from straining to have a bowel movement, sitting on a toilet for a long time, diarrhea or constipation, obesity, pregnancy, anal intercourse, low-fiber diets, and heavy lifting.
Symptoms
Irritation of the anal area
Pain or discomfort
Swelling around the anus
Bleeding while defecating
Exams and Tests
Your doctor may diagnose external hemorrhoids without the need for other exams, but for internal ones he or she may include an examination of the anal canal and rectum. These may include a digital exam, a visual inspection, or a colonoscopy.
Treatments
Hemorrhoids can be tended to with home treatments such as high-fiber foods, creams, suppositories, aspirin, or sitting in a tub of warm water. You should always see a doctor if you do not get relief within a week, or if you have severe pain or bleeding.
